Cycotix Racing has announced today that they are thrilled to partner with HED wheels for the next 5 years.
Team owner, John Kingston, said that the team went to extraordinary lengths to ensure they were on the best equipment available.
“We got our first test wheels about 5 months ago and the first thing we did was give them to our serial gear destroyer, Will Holmes, to put them through their paces. Not only did the 'Monster' race the wheels in two Roubaix-style races on gravel roads, riding away solo to take out the Bothwell Roubaix, but he also spent significant time training on the JET 6s.”
"They are just bomb-proof", said Holmes. "They're fast, especially in a crosswind, stiff as hell and handle just awesome. In training I actually rode, full gas through as many potholes as I could find, just to see how they would hold up. They didn't even go out of true.”
With Will weighing 86 kg on a good day, and with a peak power approaching 2000 watts, if he can't break them, no one can.

One thing that has taken the team some getting used to is the tyre pressure used when pairing the 25mm wide HED wheels with a 25mm clincher. HED importer Brent Dawson, from Dawson Sports explains: “ What riders don’t often understand is that a 25 mm tyre , bags out to 27 even 28 mm on the 25 mm width rim. This means that if you run high pressures in the tyres, say 110 psi, this actually compresses the rim, decreasing spoke tension and making the wheel less stiff and prone to breaking spokes. The rolling resistance of a 25mm tyre is very close to that of a 23 mm tyre, but offers the benefit of better handling , puncture resistance and aerodynamics. “ The optimum pressure is a little bit of a trade secret but the Cycotix team is certainly running well under a 100 PSI for all racing.
So what wheels will Cycotix Racing be running in 2016? To be honest, the riders could not choose between clinchers and tubulars and will run a a mixture of the JET 6 Black with 25mm clinchers and Stinger 6 wheels equipped with the world famous FMB Roubaix and CX 25 mm tubulars . “ It gives us more flexibility” explained Adam Hartley who is well known for having ridden almost every top end wheel set available whilst working at Blue Cycles in Darwin. “The Jet Blacks have a specially machined braking surface that improves braking in the wet by up to 70 percent , and are more convenient in the event of a puncture. The Stingers 6s are lighter at around 1481 g per pair and in combination with the FMB tyres which give us unmatched puncture resistance, comfort and roll beautifully. They are both super fast sets of wheels and are as good as anything I have ridden ”
